With proposals due Feb. 26, the CAS is offering awards for the creation or revision of an undergraduate course on Southeast Asia, as well as its course-development grants on Culture and Language Across the Curriculum, which can involve any Asian language.
Grants for new or revised courses on Southeast Asia
CAS will offer two faculty awards for the creation or significant revision of an undergraduate course on Southeast Asia in any discipline. This opportunity is offered as part of a larger two-year initiative funded by a U.S. Department of Education Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language (UISFL) grant.
Funding will be provided to faculty to develop new courses with Southeast Asia content or revise existing courses to add Southeast Asia content in order to enhance the area studies curriculum and build toward the Southeast Asia track in the Asian studies major. Two $1,500 stipends will be awarded for a total of $3,000 per year. Proposals for new Global Seminars in Southeast Asia are also welcome.
All grants will be made to support faculty engaged in curriculum research and development during summer 2018. Awards will be paid as summer salary (subject to taxes and withholding) or as reimbursement for travel or course materials.

Culture and Language Across the Curriculum course-development grants
CAS is currently accepting applications for Culture and Language Across the Curriculum (CLAC) course-development grants. CLAC is a national framework designed to promote the use of foreign languages to enhance the study of non-language subjects.
CU Boulder faculty who would like to add CLAC techniques to their teaching are invited to apply for CLAC Fellow course-development grants for summer 2018. This opportunity is offered as part of a larger two-year initiative funded by the associate dean of undergraduate education in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Recipients who receive the summer stipend should offer the new/revised course in academic year 2018–19. All recipients will receive training and support through the CAS CLAC pilot program and CLAC Consortium members. CLAC courses should utilize primary language sources, including historical or contemporary materials and mass media.
All grants will be paid as summer salary and are subject to taxes and withholding. Award recipients will be asked to submit a brief report and syllabus for the new course during the fall 2018 semester. Failure to do so will result in ineligibility for future CAS faculty awards.
Three types of CLAC course-development grants will be offered for summer 2018:
CLAC Co-Seminar Course Development Grants
These grants will offer a $1,000 stipend for the development of a supplemental one-credit undergraduate co-seminar, drawing students and content from an existing disciplinary course in any department. Faculty will be responsible for teaching this co-seminar using primary Asian language sources to enhance the content of the main course. CLAC co-seminars will be listed as ASIA 4001 (Arts & Humanities) or ASIA 4002 (Social Sciences).
Japanese CLAC Co-Seminar Course Development Grants
These grants will offer a $500 stipend for the development of a supplemental one-credit undergraduate co-seminar using Japanese language and culture, drawing students and content from an existing disciplinary course in any department. Instruction in co-seminars will be given by a paid student-language facilitator with supervision by the professor of record. CLAC co-seminars will be listed as ASIA 4001 (Arts & Humanities) or ASIA 4002 (Social Sciences). Funding for these grants is currently pending.
Standard Course CLAC Integration Grants
These grants will offer a $500 stipend to incorporate Asia-related CLAC assignments into standard classes. Faculty will be responsible for incorporating primary language assignments and CLAC-oriented projects into an existing syllabus in order to enrich the content of the course. Such assignments can be optional or utilize cultural materials for students who don’t have sufficient Asian language skills.
Application information
Applications should consist of three parts: a brief proposal (two pages maximum) addressing the role that Asian language materials could play in supplementing the course, providing examples of materials that could be used for CLAC, and outlining selected topics from the main course that would lend themselves to CLAC techniques; a copy of the existing course syllabus; and a two- to three-page CV.
Applications are due Monday, Feb. 26, via email to cas@colorado.edu. Please list the name of the grant you are applying for (above) in the subject line.
