October’s Monthly Ethics & Compliance Education Series will feature a presentation on best practices in mentoring and working with high school students in your research labs.  CU Science Discovery has managed a successful high school research program for several years and will share useful tips and lessons learned to help CU researchers support high school students while volunteering in on-campus labs.

Stacey Forsyth, Director of CU Science Discovery, and Kathryn Penzkover, High School Programs Manager, will share their knowledge and insight into what you should know before having a high school student in your lab.  Their session will provide an overview of guidelines and required university paperwork, tips on recruiting and selecting motivated students, training resources for you to use to help prepare high school student researchers and a checklist to ensure you remain on track for a successful mentoring relationship.

Stacey and Kathryn will be joined by Dr. Dana Calhourn from Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, who will share a firsthand experience from her recent mentor relationship. Risk Management will also be in attendance to answer questions regarding university resources available.  During the hour session, there will be ample time for audience Q&A.
