Hundreds of cyclists will take to the road on Sept. 10 to raise money for scholarships at the University of Colorado Boulder.

The Elevations Credit Union Buffalo Bicycle Classic is a charity cycling event that raises funds for scholarships in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder. Since its inception, the event has raised almost $3.5 million in scholarships that have been distributed to more than 400 CU Boulder students.

The 2017 event, held on Sept. 10, will start and end on Colorado Avenue near Folsom Field.

“This year, as much or more than ever, arts and sciences funding for higher education from local and regional fundraising efforts is essential to CU students’ success, as federal and state support is under pressure,” said Rosie Allen, scholarship coordinator and Buffalo Bicycle Classic manager.

“For those who actively support arts and sciences education, our youth, and who recognize their contribution to our society and our future, it is increasingly important to support the efforts of the Buff Bike Classic scholarship.” Allen said the event aims to reward those who support higher education with a unique cycling experience, through a variety of ride-route offerings tailored to meet the needs of experienced enthusiast cyclists, or for a fun in-town family outing.

Ride routes range from the Little Buff 14-mile family ride to the Buff Epic, which covers 100 miles of classic Front Range roads. The epic course includes a climb up Boulder Canyon, which will be closed to westbound traffic from 7 to 9 a.m., giving recreational cyclists the challenge of Boulder Canyon without the distraction of cars. 

Between the Little Buff and Epic are offerings of 35-, 50-, 70-, 75-Epic and 100-mile routes, all of which will be feature full aid stations and detailed course markings. 

For those who want to support students, but who are not interested in cycling or who cannot participate on Sept. 10, the Buffalo Bicycle Classic also accepts tax-deductible donations directly through its website. 

Scholarships range from $10,000, to full-tuition and fees over a four-year commitment. All incoming students who are Colorado residents are automatically considered for the scholarship.

Scholarships are awarded to students based on a combination of merit and financial need. To remain in the scholarship program, students must maintain 12 credit hours and a 3.0 grade-point average during their time at CU Boulder.
