“Air Wars and Ground Games”

A Panel Organized by Kenneth Bickers, Professor, Political Science;
and Anand Sokhey, Associate Professor, Political Science

With Election Day quickly approaching, experts from Political Science explore campaigning in what has been a particularly tumultuous presidential election cycle. How are campaign ads used to mobilize voters? How has campaigning adapted to the use of social networks? What techniques are used to utilize social networks for voter turnout? These important issues will be explored, along with examples of advertising that implement these strategies.

“The Disaffected Voter: The Impact of Campaign 2016
in November and Beyond”

A panel organized by Elizabeth Skewes, Journalism Department,
College of Media, Communication and Information

The current political season features candidates on both the Republican and Democratic tickets who have the highest negative ratings of any candidate in recent history. And the election is occurring in a time of increased polarization in the country, increasingly pointed coverage by the media and a steady stream of negative advertising. So what does all of this mean for the candidate who wins in November? And what are the implications for U.S. politics moving forward? A panel of faculty members from the College of Media, Communication and Information will analyze this historic and controversial presidential campaign and will discuss how the discourse – by the public, in the media and in advertising – might shape future elections.
