Happy October everyone! This week is all about the parties and festivities, and I’ve got a lot of fun stuff planned for you all. I am Sarah Ellsworth: IPHY major, Boulder native, and event connoisseur, writing to you from the comfort of beautiful CU-Boulder on all of your weekly opportunities for community involvement, educational whatnot, and supreme fun. As always, have a fabulous week.

Wednesday, Oct. 7

Music for Malala Party. Swing by Shine Restaurant on 13th and Pearl to listen to music by Latlaus Sky and Von Disco and benefit the Malala Yousafzai Fund, which works to put and keep girls in school. This community event will also feature a raffle, with giveaways of some pretty cool health and dining type stuff. Tickets are $10 and raffle tickets are $5. Click here to learn more.

The War of the Worlds. Be sure to tune in to Radio 1190, as CU-Boulder's student-run radio station will broadcast the radio drama The War of the Worlds, produced by Orson Welles in 1938. The original broadcast, describing a Martian invasion based on a novel by H.G. Wells, incited panic and chaos as listeners confused the radio drama for breaking news. The broadcast begins at 6 p.m. Radio 1190.

Thursday, Oct. 8

Advanced Screening of Steve Jobs. Be sure to catch the always captivating Michael Fassbender in the not-yet-released motion picture that documents Apple creator Steve Jobs’ life and work. It will be shown at 8 p.m. in Chem 140 and there will be popcorn! Facebook event page.

Bioneers Promo Party. Stop by the Environmental Center between 7 and 9 p.m. to hang out with some cool people and do some fun promotional stuff for the Bioneers conference. Bioneers is a series of talks and events centered around sustainability, science and moving toward a healthier planet. This party will feature free food and music, as well as some fun volunteer hours. RSVP here.

Friday, Oct. 9

Free yoga session. A certified yoga teacher will be dropping into Flemming 144 from 3 to 4 this afternoon to teach stress reducing yoga and breathing techniques. If you’ve been feeling a little overworked lately, then come by to relax for an hour, and wear something comfortable. Don’t worry- mats are provided. More information here.

SFJAZZ Collective: The Music of Michael Jackson. Mackey Auditorium hosts the brilliant SFJAZZ Collective from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. They will be playing a tribute concert to the Jazz Greats, but with a special funky groovy twist: Michael Jackson’s music will be making an appearance as well. Tickets are $15.

Saturday, Oct. 10

College Outdoor Fest. Embrace the spirit of Boulder this weekend by heading over to the Spot Gym (3240 Prairie Ave.) and strapping on your climbing shoes. The Spot will be hosting an all day festival that will showcase pro climbers, boulderers, slack-liners, DJs, food and music. Be sure to watch some of the amazing moves those pro athletes can pull off (in black lights no less!) and enter yourself into the running to win some cool stuff. 10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse Hike. This event is part group hike, part performance, and part guide to the end of the world. You will walk amidst beautiful Chautauqua and learn the 10 steps to not being eaten alive by zombies (very important, Buffs). Be sure to bring comfortable hiking shoes, water and a raincoat, and get your tickets early since it may sell out! Tickets.

Round and Round Up and Down: A 31st Century Child's Guide to Spirals or The Time Traveler's Bathroom Reader dance performance. Be sure to check out the CU Dance Department’s new show at Fiske at 7 p.m., which will feature some incredible choreography about imagination, stories, math and science. The theme is spirals, and it’s going to be beautiful. Tickets are $10 at the door. Learn more here.
