New and returning students moving into the University of Colorado Boulder residence halls can choose which day to move in Aug. 18-21, will swipe Buff OneCards instead of filling out a form to check in and will be able to take advantage of “Quick Drop Stations.”
“We take pride in doing our best to provide a warm welcome and a helping hand for our new and returning students,” said John Fox, associate director of Residence Life. “This year we decided to make some changes in order to make the process as smooth as possible.”
One of those changes is to provide iPads to staff checking in residents so that students can swipe their Buff OneCard instead of filling out a paper card. Another is to allow students to move in early for a daily room-and-board rate of $53.15, starting Monday, Aug. 18, at 9 a.m., according to Maria Hoffman, assistant director of Residence Life. The daily rate applies until the 2014-15 academic year contract starts, which is on Thursday, Aug. 21, at 9 a.m. Students can request to arrive early at https://housing.colorado.edu/news/early-arrival-request.
On the first day of move-in, Aug. 18, and on Aug. 21, the day the majority of students move in, “Quick Drop Stations” will be designated around the residence halls. Students will check in with a photo ID at the Quick Drop Station closest to their residence hall where volunteers will help unload vehicles and direct drivers to extended-term parking lots.
“To allow everyone the opportunity to get close to their residence halls and move their items in more conveniently, we are asking families to park in the extended-term lots after unloading students’ belongings,” said Hoffman. “Parking and Transportation Services personnel will be on hand to direct traffic.”

Volunteers from a variety of campus groups will be stationed near all of the residence halls to help students and their families move belongings into the halls as quickly as possible. Volunteers from the Residence Hall Association’s Stampede Leadership program, returning residence hall students and students from several student groups will wear black hats with “BUFF Welcome Squad” on them, identifying them as move-in staff. The volunteers will be available to assist new students primarily on specified move-in dates, including Monday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Thursday, Aug. 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Volunteer groups at move-in also will include the CU football team, the Men’s Lacrosse Club, CU Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council and the Young Life organization.
Some students will be moving into the newly renovated and reopened Baker Hall. Baker was closed for renovation during the 2013-14 school year and includes a number of sustainability features to improve water efficiency, save energy and reduce carbon emissions.
Orientation and social activities for new residence hall students will be held the evenings of Aug. 19 and 20. On Aug. 21, all first-year residence hall students will be required to attend a hall meeting with other students from their floors to get acquainted and learn about policies, services, the roommate agreement and other activities planned for the week.
