The University of Colorado Boulder enrolled more international students during the 2012-13 academic year and sent more students abroad during the 2011-12 academic year than any other higher education institution in Colorado.
The data, released today by the Institute of International Education in its annual Open Doors Report, shows that CU-Boulder was home to 1,910 international students during the 2012-13 school year, up from 1,681 in 2011-12.
CU-Boulder sent 1,330 students overseas during the 2011-12 school year, up from 1,316 in 2010-11.
“Our international campus results in a broad perspective and global education for all our students,” said CU-Boulder Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano. “Students, faculty, staff and visiting scholars who pursue global opportunities here and overseas broaden global and cultural understanding for themselves, our community, the state of Colorado and beyond.”
CU-Boulder has held the No. 1 spot in Colorado for sending and receiving international students for more than five years, according to Larry Bell, executive director of CU-Boulder’s Office of International Education.
“For more than five years, our campus community has led the way in the state as an example of international education and its benefits,” said Bell. “International education at CU-Boulder contributes tens of millions of dollars annually to our state economy. More significantly though, it increases discovery and mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and other countries as they together engage in some of the greatest academic, research and service endeavors around the globe.”
CU-Boulder also ranked No. 10 in the nation in 2011-12 among higher education institutions of its type for study abroad participation in semester-long programs, up from No. 12 in 2010-11.
The Open Doors Report on the flow of students to and from the United States is released annually in conjunction with International Education Week, which this year is Nov. 11-15. The week of celebration is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education.
Other top-ranking Colorado institutions recognized in this year’s Open Doors Report include the University of Denver, Colorado State University and Colorado School of Mines.
