Three University of Colorado at Boulder programs receive special recognition in the recently released 2011 Fiske Guide to Colleges, including a Top 10 ranking as "environmental studies schools that should be on your radar."
CU-Boulder also was cited as offering "particularly strong" services to students with learning disabilities and as one of 25 "major universities strong in music." The Fiske Guide to Colleges is prepared by Edward B. Fiske, who served for 17 years as education editor of The New York Times.
Fiske personally selected the 10 undergraduate environmental studies programs he believes future college applicants should know about before selecting a program, according to a news release. The other nine schools included Dartmouth College, the University of Washington and the University of California, Davis.
CU-Boulder was among 15 major universities recognized for offering "particularly strong" services to students with learning disabilities. "Colleges and universities recognize that a significant segment of the population may suffer problems that qualify as learning disabilities, and the range of support services offered to such students is increasing," according to the guide.
CU-Boulder also was highlighted as one of 25 major universities with a strong music program. Among the other universities making the list were Harvard, Yale, the University of Michigan and the University of California, Los Angeles. CU's College of Music has appeared on the select list for several years.
The guide also gave CU-Boulder high marks for its residential academic programs and its programs in physics, psychology, geography, aerospace engineering, biology and integrative physiology. CU received a cumulative rating of 12 out of 15 possible points in the guide for academics, social life and quality of life.
The Fiske Guide to Colleges includes an essay on each of the more than 300 institutions selected for inclusion. The essays were compiled from responses to questionnaires by school administrators and current students, in addition to other sources of information.
