Larry Bell Of CU-Denver Is Named Director Of CU-Boulder Office Of International Student Services
Larry Bell has been named the new director of International Student and Scholar Services at the University of Colorado at Boulder, formerly known as Foreign Student and Scholar Services.
Bell replaces Phil deNeeve, who retired from the post last spring, and comes to CU-Boulder from the CU-Denver campus where he was director of the Office of International Education.
International Student and Scholar Services is a part of CU-Boulder's Office of International Education. Michael Delaney, director of CU-Boulder's Office of International Education, said he was pleased to have Bell in the position because of his broad experience in the field of international student services.
"I am delighted that Larry accepted our offer to direct International Student and Scholar Services," Delaney said. "He brings a wealth of professional experience, a wide perspective on international education and he has held many leadership positions in our national professional association. Coming from the Denver campus, he knows the CU system and is playing a key role in the university's compliance with the new federal international student and scholar tracking system."
International Student and Scholar Services is responsible for hosting approximately 1,100 students and 600 faculty annually from foreign countries and for maintaining programs that provide counseling, assistance and support for international students and visiting faculty and researchers.
As director, Bell is the lead "designated school official" for CU-Boulder in its dealings with the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service and is responsible for the campus's "Exchange Visitor Program" authorized by the U.S. State Department. The office also coordinates numerous programs to assist international students and to help campus departments integrate foreign students and scholars into campus academic and social activities.
At CU-Denver, where he was director of international education from 1996 to this year, Bell was responsible for all international education programs and coordination of all study abroad programs for CU-Denver students. He also taught a class that was mandatory for all new students at CU-Denver titled "Classroom, Culture and Communication."
Prior to the CU-Denver post, Bell was director of the Office of International Studies and Programs at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, from 1988 to 1996 and director of English as a Second Language Programs, also at UW-Milwaukee, from 1980 to 1988.
