While some of our classes are restricted to Theatre & Dance majors, several are open to any currently enrolled CU student. Taking a theatre or dance course as an elective, general education requirement, as a degree requirement for majors, or for the experience is highly encouraged by our department! Below is a list of classes which currently have open seats.

Stretching, hip work, spinal undulations and poly-rhythmic orientations are covered. Educational highlights include discourse regarding cultural appropriation and gender coding in human movement.

Performance Improvisation Techniques - DNCE 4023

  • 2-credit course
  • Arts Sci Gen Ed: Distribution-Arts Humanities
  • Fall 2020, Tuesdays & Thursdays, 2:20 pm - 3:35 pm

“Explores movement and vocal improvisational techniques to enhance creative, interdisciplinary, collaborative and performance skills. Helps individuals expand their definition of performance, discover and access the diversity of the human instrument and employ improvisation to create personal and social commentary.”

More specifically, our movement scores will be influenced by the questioning of Performance Improvisation.  We’ll do this through the lens and research of mayfield brooks (Improvising While Black), Ketih Hennessy (Questioning Contact Improvisation), Nancy Stark Smith (Underscore), among others.  Our plan is to begin this course outdoors (if space allows), then segue into the indoors as the weather shifts.  Participating fully or partially on-line is always an option throughout the entirety of the course.  Students’ needs around safety will be constantly attended to.
