Lucas Munce wins 2011 DownBeat Award

Lucas Munce (MM candidate) received the 2011 DownBeat Magazine Award for Graduate College Outstanding Performances by a Jazz Soloist. More details about DownBeat’s 34th Annual Student Music Awards will be announced in the magazine’s upcoming June issue. The CU Jazz Studies program has won 15 Student DownBeat Awards since 2002 in numerous categories.

University of Colorado announces $1.5 billion fundraising campaign

On April 25, University of Colorado President Bruce Benson today announced Creating Futures, a $1.5 billion comprehensive fundraising campaign, the most ambitious in university history, which will benefit people, programs and places across CU’s four campuses.

n April 8, 2011, the College of Music hosted the first CU Invitational Orchestra Festival. The festival involved the participation of three orchestras from Boulder High School, and orchestras from Legacy High School, Lakewood High School and Cherry Creek High School.

Annie Booth gets Honorable Mention in 2011 ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer Awards

Jazz Piano Bachelor of Music student Annie Booth received an Honorable Mention as part of the 2011 ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer Awards. This program, established in 2002, was created to encourage gifted jazz composers from throughout the United States. The recipients, who receive cash awards, range in age from 9 to 29, and are selected through a juried national competition.

I first met Lisa Canning a little over a year ago at the first-ever conference on music entrepreneurship in higher ed, sponsored by the College Music Society. When, during our very first conversation, I learned that she had studied clarinet at Northwestern University — a leading conservatory preparing musicians for orchestral performing jobs — and that she had discovered there that playing in an orchestra was not her calling, I felt an immediate bond.
