Erin Paton, founder of the Tuturu Jazz Orchestra

Erin Paton was still in high school in Colorado Springs, Colorado when she started writing big band charts for her school jazz band. Now a music education major in her sophomore year at the University of Colorado Boulder College of Music, Paton has founded the Tuturu Jazz Orchestra with the help of the Entrepreneurship Center for Music at CU. The CU New Opera Workshop (CU NOW) returned June 22-25 with an exciting new program of workshop-style performances featuring commentary from the composers. The workshop opened June 14 with a sold-out recital by CU voice alumnus Ashraf Sewailam.

Lucas Munce wins 2011 DownBeat Award

Lucas Munce (MM candidate) received the 2011 DownBeat Magazine Award for Graduate College Outstanding Performances by a Jazz Soloist. More details about DownBeat’s 34th Annual Student Music Awards will be announced in the magazine’s upcoming June issue. The CU Jazz Studies program has won 15 Student DownBeat Awards since 2002 in numerous categories.

University of Colorado announces $1.5 billion fundraising campaign

On April 25, University of Colorado President Bruce Benson today announced Creating Futures, a $1.5 billion comprehensive fundraising campaign, the most ambitious in university history, which will benefit people, programs and places across CU’s four campuses.

CU Invitational Orchestra Festival

n April 8, 2011, the College of Music hosted the first CU Invitational Orchestra Festival. The festival involved the participation of three orchestras from Boulder High School, and orchestras from Legacy High School, Lakewood High School and Cherry Creek High School.

Annie Booth gets Honorable Mention in 2011 ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer Awards

Jazz Piano Bachelor of Music student Annie Booth received an Honorable Mention as part of the 2011 ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer Awards. This program, established in 2002, was created to encourage gifted jazz composers from throughout the United States. The recipients, who receive cash awards, range in age from 9 to 29, and are selected through a juried national competition.
