Alumni News: Miroslava Mintcheva wins MTNA Fellowship

Dr. Miroslava Mintcheva (DMA 2010, piano performance) is the recipient of the 2011 MTNA StAR Studio Teacher Fellowship Award. This prestigious award is given to an individual who exhibits exceptional teaching and performance skills and is deeply committed to the teaching profession. She is very proud to have been selected as the winner out of a large national pool of applicants. The award is in the amount of $3,000.

Lisa Canning - No more starving artists

I first met Lisa Canning a little over a year ago at the first-ever conference on music entrepreneurship in higher ed, sponsored by the College Music Society. When, during our very first conversation, I learned that she had studied clarinet at Northwestern University — a leading conservatory preparing musicians for orchestral performing jobs — and that she had discovered there that playing in an orchestra was not her calling, I felt an immediate bond.

Saturday, January 22 at 7:30 p.m. in Grusin Music Hall. The winners of the competition were Forty Fingers of Fury (Allan Armstrong, Laura Brumbaugh, Doreen Lee and Sunyoung Lee, pianos with Owen Zhou, technical guru).

CU Jazz teams up with the St. Vrain Jazz Festival

On Thursday, December 2nd, CU Jazz Ensemble I took part in the first St. Vrain Jazz Festival. Seven high schools from the St. Vrain school district took part in the festival, which is in its inaugural year. The following high schools participated: Niwot, Erie, Frederick, Longmont, Silver Creek, Mead and Lyons. Niwot had two bands participate!

Celebrating 100 years hosting the best performing arts, lectures and entertainment events, Macky Auditorium is one of the most valuable and recognizable historical spaces on the CU Boulder Campus and a premiere venue in the Front Range. This short historical documentary made in celebration of Macky Auditorium’s 100th Anniversary was created thanks to the hard work of Executive Producer Tony Moores, Producer/Director Bud Leonard, writer Silvia Pettem and contributor Alan Cass.

Kathleen McGuire (DMA, 2000)

Alumna Kathleen McGuire (DMA, 2000) was one of only six conductors nationwide to have been awarded a special citation in 2010 from The American Prize for Excellence in Music Education, for her work with the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus. It is a recognition of distinction, noting her as among America’s finest teachers of the art of music.
