INSTAAR is committed to building an inclusive, actively antiracist institute where people of all identities are welcome, safe, and supported, especially those from groups historically excluded from science and academia.

Addressing problematic behavior

Poster for INSTAAR stating that climate change is real, love is love, black lives matter, feminism is for everyone, earth sustains us, and immigrants are vital. Modified from SammyKatta.com/diversity

We aim to create an environment where individuals feel safe, heard, and encouraged to be themselves, and where all INSTAAR members understand their important roles in our anti-racism plan. We are working to dismantle systemic biases within our institute and within our larger institutional and scientific contexts, align the demographics of INSTAAR with those of our state and nation, and reduce barriers to living in Boulder and conducting scientific research at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Sarah Crump Graduate Fellowship

Sarah Crump, in purple coat, stands in front of a dramatic Baffin Island landscape of colorful tundra suddenly broken by towering cliffs.

With the help of Sarah, her family, and friends, INSTAAR has established a fellowship in her name. Please help us raise an endowment sufficient to support a full-year Graduate Research Fellowship, providing salary and tuition for one INSTAAR grad student each year. The fellowship will give a boost to their study of Earth or environmental science in Arctic or alpine regions and also be a lever for equity and underserved communities.

Q&A with Sara Padula, first recipient of the Sarah Crump Graduate Fellowship

We are proud to announce Sara Padula as the first recipient of the Sarah Crump Graduate Fellowship. The fellowship provides summer support for a graduate student researching Earth or environmental science in Arctic or alpine regions. We caught up with Sara to ask about her research, her summer, and life as a scientist. Read more

Airy Peralta and Jared Collins garner first INSTAAR Graduate Community Awards

Airy Peralta and Jared Collins are the recipients of the first INSTAAR Graduate Community Awards. The award is a new honor that recognizes students who expend substantial effort in activities that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the INSTAAR community and as representatives of INSTAAR. Student use of open office spaces at SEEC has been down since the pandemic. New funding seeks to make SEEC spaces safer, more engaging, and more inclusive.

Recipients of President’s DEI Awards, Grants honored at reception

CU System awards and grants to advance diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) were also honored at an April 20 event. INSTAAR has received a grant to address inclusive open workspaces. Through participatory scenario development, ethnographic walks, and semi-structured interviews, SEEC community members will reflect on inequitable and unwelcoming spaces and conceptualize just future concepts. INSTAAR's statement on systemic racism

Painted mural of George Floyd surrounded by flowers

INSTAAR's statement on systemic racism outlines the overdue realization that we are part of the same systems of institutionalized racism that lead to police violence, racist policies, and other acts of anti-Blackness. As researchers in the Earth sciences, we understand cumulative effects and how systems interact. We also see how climate and environmental issues combine to disproportionately affect people who are marginalized, especially BIPOC communities. That understanding must support us in doing our part to dismantle systemic racism in our own spaces.

Land acknowledgement

The University of Colorado Boulder, Colorado’s flagship university, honors and recognizes the many contributions of Indigenous peoples in our state.

CU Boulder acknowledges that it is located on the traditional territories and ancestral homelands of the Cheyenne, Arapaho, Ute and many other Native American nations. Their forced removal from these territories has caused devastating and lasting impacts. While the University of Colorado Boulder can never undo or rectify the devastation wrought on Indigenous peoples, we commit to improving and enhancing engagement with Indigenous peoples and issues locally and globally.

 We will do this by:

  • Recognizing and amplifying the voices of Indigenous CU Boulder students, staff and faculty and their work.
  • Educating, conducting research, supporting student success and integrating Indigenous knowledge.
  • Consulting, engaging and working collaboratively with tribal nations to enhance our ability to provide access and culturally sensitive support and to recruit, retain and graduate Native American students in a climate that is inclusive and respectful.
