Archives - CU Libraries

The Special Collections, Archives & Preservation department of the CU Libraries is offering an internship position working with archival collections. Tasks will include surveying, organizing, and creating an inventory of an archival collection to improve researcher access to the collection. As an intern you will receive a general introduction to archival collections including their arrangement, description, and preservation. Collections range in topic from history of science, political science, university history, history of the nuclear west including rocky flats, labor history among others. Your final project will be all or portions of an archival finding aid (or context and inventory for a collection).

Schedule: 8-10 hours per week during spring semester
Format: In person
Compensation: Students may earn 3 internship credits by completing several personal reflections and submit final project from their internship. To earn credit, students must enroll in HIST 4930 (syllabus).
Desired skills:

- General knowledge of nineteenth-and twentieth-century history
- Ability effectively in a self-paced environment

Carnegie Library - Boulder Public Library

Carnegie Library for Local History, the local history archive of the Boulder Public Library, is offering an internship to promote the use of archival materials for local K-5 students. The intern will work with staff to identify and compile primary source materials from the Carnegie archive that align with school social studies standards and curricula. Tasks will include: researching in the archive, scanning and transcribing materials, reviewing school standards and thinking critically and creatively about materials that will engage K-5 students. The final product of the internship will be primary source curriculum materials for teachers (slide presentations, teacher resource webpage, and/or handouts).

Schedule: 8-10 hours per week during spring semester
Format: In person, with some remote work avaliable
Compensation: Students may earn 3 internship credits by completing several personal reflections and submit final project from their internship. To earn credit, students must enroll in HIST 4930 (syllabus).
Desipred Skills:
- Interest in finding ways to engage school-age students with historical materials (we are especially interested in candidates thinking about careers in education)
- Experience using library databases
- Ability to read handwritten script/cursive (for transcription of diaries)
- Interest in learning about archives and Boulder County history

Communication & Community Building - CU History Department

The History Department at CU Boulder is offering an internship position in Communication and Community Building. The internship will have two major components, the first of which will be to learn to create public and undergraduate-focused content for the Department’s website and social media channels. With the Department’s Undergraduate Program Coordinator, the intern will contribute to developing a plan for new features on our website tuned to undergraduate interests (such as, publishing features/interviews with faculty, alumni, graduate or undergraduate students, including those participating in internships, senior thesis, study abroad, etc.) and to share those and other history-related news on social media. (Training on website development and social media available if needed.). For the second component, the intern will serve as the leader of the History Club, recruiting members as well as designing, organizing and scheduling events for students. All together, the internship will provide experience with public and university communications, community building, and event-planning around interests in history and the humanities. Your final product will be a portfolio of website and social media articles that you have produced and published.

Digital Slavery Research Lab and Walk With Web Inc.

The Digital Slavery Research Lab (DSRL) focuses on developing, linking, layering, and archiving open-source data and multimedia related to the global phenomenon of slavery and human trafficking. DSRL's mission is to train students to become interdisciplinary collaborators using historical research on the African Diaspora and digital humanities methods. Through the design of sustainable resources, we aim to enhance mutual understanding and stimulate intercultural dialogues. This interdisciplinary lab has aligned or partnered with various centers and labs in data science at the University of Colorado Boulder, as well as industry leaders in digital humanities, particularly through Walk With Web Inc. Depending on student interests and skills, there is opportunity to work on a variety of digital projects, such as SlaveryImages.org, LiberatedAfricans.org, as well as other projects related to spatial modeling migratory patterns of enslaved people during the era of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The DSRL is also looking for strong leaders interested in forming “CU Students Against Modern Slavery,” which would involve initiating a sustainable digital infrastructure and acquiring funding through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP).

Latino History Project

The Latino History Project is seeking two interns to support with our ongoing work finding and bringing to light the many hidden histories of Colorado’s Chicanx and Latinx communities. The LHP works with communities across Colorado to address this lack of awareness in both schools and communities. Through our workshops for teachers, community workshops, and website with over two thousand primary sources, we seek to preserve and share local histories. As an intern with the LHP, you would work to; 1) gather primary sources about Colorado Chicanx/Latinx history from various archival locations, 2) Research and identify people with who we should conduct oral history interviews with, 3) Support in the conducting of these oral history interviews, 4) Organize and upload these and other materials to the LHP project website, and 5) support LHP workshop facilitators to implement new materials for the June 2022 workshop for DPS teachers. Additional projects and responsibilities will be adjusted based on interns’ interests and experience.
