8am: Observe the Transit of Mercury

Fiske Planetarium and Science Center 2414 Regent Drive, Boulder, CO 80309

Watch Mercury cross (transit) in front of the Sun. Sommers-Bausch Observatory and Fiske Planetarium will host live events. Stop by for a few minutes or stay for the entire morning. Mercury will appear as a tiny dot moving across the brilliant Sun. Why is this a big deal?  This astronomical rarity will only occur 14 times this century. The next transit observable in North America won’t happen until 2049. The only other planet we can see cross in front of the Sun is Venus. The last transit of Venus occurred in 2012 and the next one won’t happen until 2117. The only safe way to view this astronomical event is through a special solar telescope or projected via a heliostat or Sunspotter. This event is FREE! Stop by or watch the livestream.

Each Wednesday this semester, meditation will be led by Dr. Sigman Myoshin Byrd, senior instructor in the Program for Writing and Rhetoric, an 11-year zazen practitioner, member of the Eon Zen Center in Boulder, and student of Sensei Paul Gyodo Agostinelli. For more information or to reserve a spot, email Sigman (“Myoshin,”) at sigman.byrd@colorado.edu.
