Contamination surveys are required for use of unsealed radioactive material. Laboratories using unsealed materials should follow these three steps:
- Laboratory space should be surveyed with filter wipe smears to check for loose contamination. The frequency at which a survey must be taken is based on radiation use/storage. See below:
- A survey is required each week that unsealed radiation is used in the lab (defined as Sunday-Saturday).
- A survey is required each month if stock materials or waste are in storage but remain unused.
- No survey is required if a lab has no radioactive materials on hand. However, every active lab must still submit a Contamination Survey Report monthly.
- All survey results should be printed and stored in a binder within the laboratory for easy access during audits.
- Each month, every laboratory licensed for unsealed radioisotopes needs to submit a Contamination Survey Report. This report must be submitted by each active lab, regardless of radiation use/surveys performed.
Please note: If you have trouble accessing the survey submissions page, try submitting from a university computer or VPN.
