This fall, the Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL) and Office of Information Technology (OIT) will facilitate a Canvas Grading Faculty Working Group to (1) develop guidelines for student-centered grading practices in Canvas and (2) identify the resources faculty need to implement these practices in their courses. This is part of the BUS (Buff Undergraduate Success) initiative, which broadly aims to promote the success of all CU undergraduate students.

For context, CU students report that they want grades in Canvas to be more transparent and timely so that they know how they’re doing in class. Meanwhile, faculty report that they want Canvas and other technologies to make grading more efficient so that they can better utilize grading to support student learning. Finally, campus stakeholders rely on transparent and timely Canvas grades for learning analytics, early alerts, and other proactive student outreach efforts.

The Canvas Grading Faculty Working Group will be composed of faculty from diverse CU departments who teach critical, high-enrollment courses for first- and second-year students. The Working Group will meet throughout the fall 2023 semester, and we look forward to sharing our findings with the campus community in spring 2024.
