Creating a sense of belonging

As students, faculty and staff in the College of Arts and Sciences head toward fall semester, some of us might wonder where we belong.
The answer is “here,” with the herd, which moves in synchrony over hills and around threats. You are welcome here, at this time, in this place, with this group. The college strives to be a space and place of belonging, nurturing and help.

Featured Events and Programs

The summit is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (virtual) and Friday, Aug. 11, from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (in-person) with prizes on both days. All members of the college’s staff are welcome to attend. Registration is required and is available at this link.

CU Boulder's Pre-arrival Programs offer students the opportunity to move in early and meet people who share similar interests. Pre-arrival Programs focus on environment and sustainability, adventure and getting involved on campus and in the community.

The Faculty & Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) is dedicated to serving the emotional and psychological needs of the campus community. All FSAP staff are trained as generalist counselors and are equipped to deal with a wide range of personal and work related issues. You must be a CU Boulder employee to use FSAP services, and services are free to all CU Boulder faculty and staff members.

A&S Faculty for Wellness

Sara Avila

When instructors send students weekly communication linking course material with current events discussed by students the previous week and a personal message tailored to each student, the results can be significant—better grades in exams and discussions and more enjoyment of the course, as measured by student comments.

In a study conducted over five terms of an introductory statistics course, researcher Sara Avila found that having a sense of belonging to class affects learning, especially in an online environment. In two of the five semesters, the instructor supplemented core learning strategies of retrieval practice, alignment of objectives and a well-organized course with weekly personal messages. This intervention was meant to communicate to students that they are being heard and are valued and respected. In her study analysis, Avila found that these messages contributed to solving cognitive challenges including student mental mindset and student fear and mistrust.
