Climate surprises in the paleoclimate record

Paleoclimate archives such as ice cores and ocean sediments contain numerous examples of complex
and non-linear behaviors of the climate system. Feedback and threshold processes in the coupled
atmosphere-ocean-sea ice system are implicated. This presentation will review models of sea ice
and ocean processes that have been developed to understand the causes of past abrupt climate changes,
and what they tell us about the likelihood of similar climate surprises in the future.
