LECTURES & INTERACTION FOR LEARNING
Elaine Tompkins, Professor of Communication
Effective teaching requires effective communication, based upon understanding and adapting to the audience. Those who teach often take the perspective of transferring a body of knowledge to the students’ notebooks. This two-part symposium encourages another perspective: that of the students, the learner themselves.
In a lecture, how best can content be presented in order to maximize learning? The classical canons of invention, organization, and expression of ideas will be presented in the first session as a basis for preparing effective lectures. Techniques of interactive learning to supplement lectures and mini-lectures will also be discussed. In the second session, each participant will deliver a five-minute, videotaped mock classroom presentation.
