INTERDISCIPLINARY TEACHING /

INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING

Michael Theodore, College of Music
Michelle Ellsworth, Theatre and Dance

Two powerful forces are pushing academia in opposite directions. One is the need to specialize--indeed, the need to hyper-specialize. This force comes from within the academy, as doctoral students are urged to write dissertations on ever-narrower topics. The other force comes from the sea changes sweeping the world, the leveling, democratizing, digital wave that has washed across successive domains of human activity. This second force pushes us away from specialization, and towards interdisciplinary. Professors Ellsworth (Dance) and Theodore (Music) have co-taught interdisciplinary courses together for ten years, and will share some of the lessons they've learned, and the questions they still have. Attendees are invited to help make the session a collaborative discussion by bringing their own reflections, ideas and concerns to the table.
