FIX IT AND FORGET IT: A WRITING WORKSHOP FOR FACULTY

Katherine Eggert, Professor of English

Writing projects can bedevil us because writing difficulties are blind spots. We can’t recognize why we’re stuck, or why our usual rhetoric and phrasing is not getting us anywhere with a journal, a grant agency, or a group of students. Once we learn to recognize our typical writing bugaboos, we can also fix them – permanently. Each of these workshops meets three times, enrolls three participants, and takes as its subject matter each participant’s own writing. The aims are to “fix it and forget it”: make that troublesome piece of writing persuasive, clear, and crafted for its intended audience; and make those skills second nature in advance of the next project.

Each participant will be expected to submit, in advance, a document that has proved troublesome to write or revise.  At the group’s first meeting, these documents will form the basis for discussion.  Participants will then revise and meet again for further discussion of their work.  The goals of the workshop will be to transform the submissions into publishable documents.

During the Spring 2011 semester, five workshops will be offered. Attendance at all three meetings of a workshop is required. Enrollment in each workshop is limited to three registrants. Preference will be given to faculty who have not participated previously in an FTEP Writing Workshop.
