Balancing work, activities, relationships and finances on top of your academic responsibilities can feel overwhelming. An effective organizational strategy is one way to stay on track and maintain balance. Staying organized doesn’t need to be complex. Here are organizational tips for managing the different areas of your life with intention and focus.

Academics

As a student, academic commitments take up a large part of your time. Find ways to balance your schedule and workload to fit in classes, homework, group projects and office hours.

Involvement

Getting involved on campus and in the Boulder community can help you feel connected, meet new people and build skills. Yet, too many commitments can create stress and impact overall well-being. Find the right balance for your schedule.

  • Join organizations that match your interests. Choose groups you care about so that you can spend your time pursuing your passions. Check out the many opportunities available for students on BuffConnect.
  • Research opportunities that offer multiple benefits, like building your resume and skills while also fulfilling your goals. The Volunteer Resource Center offers different levels of commitment to fit all schedules.
  • Gain leadership skills as part of your group participation to enhance your experience while you connect with others. CU Boulder offers many leadership opportunities.

Finances

Managing finances can feel stressful at times. But keeping your finances organized can reduce stress and help you avoid mismanagement issues. Develop a plan to keep track of your money.

  • Connect to your financial institution's online banking system and download their app to track your cash flow.
  • Create a monthly budget that covers all your expenses, including savings to cover emergencies or next year’s college expenses.
  • Track your meal plan swipes, Munch Money and Campus Cash balances.

Campus jobs

Working as a student employee offers a great opportunity to earn money, gain experience and build relationships. While many students work off campus, on-campus jobs often offer more flexibility to help students balance their academic and work schedules.

  • Work with your manager to create a work schedule that aligns with your class schedule and other commitments.
  • Find a job that can enhance your academic experience and matches your interests.
  • Communicate with your manager and co-workers to set expectations so that you create a positive reputation and working relationships.

Self-care, relationships and fun

Taking care of yourself, building relationships and having fun are all important parts of your college experience and quality of life. Whether spending too much or too little time in these areas, improved organization skills can help you thrive in all aspects of your life.
