CU Boulder is seeking a leader to guide a comprehensive public safety organization built on partnership, prevention, preparedness and an integrated approach to campus safety. The Vice Chancellor for Public Safety (VCPS) will help lead a comprehensive division dedicated to creating a campus where our students, faculty and staff feel safe and can thrive. 

Public Safety at CU Boulder 

CU Boulder’s Division of Public Safety (DPS) comprises approximately 100 public safety professionals dedicated to enhancing campus safety by strengthening existing partnerships, sharing safety information and resources, and focusing on identifying, assessing and mitigating public safety risks. 

Integrated Public Safety 

 

CU Boulder’s public safety model brings together law enforcement, security services, threat assessment, public safety operations and specialized response capabilities. 

Community-Centered Approach 

 

Public safety professionals foster a community-centered approach through partnerships with campus constituents, local governments and regional law enforcement agencies. 

Division Highlights

CU Boulder Police Department

A fully accredited, 24/7 law enforcement agency with approximately 40 commissioned officers. CU Boulder Police Department (CUPD) provides patrol services, investigations and community engagement across university properties. 

Security Services

Centralized campus security operations that manage video surveillance, access control, and intrusion detection systems and physical security deployment, helping support a coordinated campus-wide security strategy. 

Threat Assessment

A specialized team dedicated to identifying, assessing and mitigating concerning or threatening behaviors to help maintain a safe learning, living and working environment. 

Public Safety Operations 

Coordinates planning, preparedness and response efforts for emergencies, major incidents and large-scale campus events across the university community.

Flight Operations 

Supports university public safety and research initiatives through drone operations, pilot training and certification, and campus unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) oversight. 

Campus Safety Resources 

DPS supports a range of campus safety tools and programs, including the CU Boulder Safe App and CU Boulder Alerts, which help connect students, faculty and staff with critical safety information and emergency resources.
