Resources for Students/Faculty/Staff
Below is general information. If you have other questions or need additional information about department operations, contact one of the appropriate staff members.
Building Access
Following the renovation of the historic Hellems building on the University of Colorado Boulder's Main Campus, the Department of Linguistics is now back in our permanent Hellems home, with staff and faculty offices on the second floor and in the basement, while study space for graduate students is on the third floor. Some research labs and the CLASIC Professional Master's Program are still located next door in the Lucile Berkeley Buchanan Building or LBB, immediately due west of Hellems. Both buildings are open and can be accessed by CU Boulder faculty, staff, students, and affiliates between the hours of 7am and 10pm, Monday through Friday.
Linguistics faculty, staff, and students who require keys to a Hellems or LBB office or lab, or need extended access to either building (outside 7am-10pm on weekdays, and on weekends/holidays) should fill out the form linked below. Students who require extended access to any building and/or need keys to any labs or office spaces require the permission of their faculty advisor/supervisor, and must attach confirmation of that permission to their request.
Meeting Room Reservations
The Department of Linguistics has few dedicated meeting rooms, but rooms are available to reserve in both Hellems and LBB. To the extent possible, we will reserve classroom space for critical needs like thesis defenses. If you need a meeting room for a regularly scheduled or one-off meeting (with an academic purpose), please make a reservation on EMS where you can reserve a room for an academic purpose. If you need access to EMS, please reach out to Ethan McGinnis. Linguistics controls or has access to several lab/seminar rooms within LBB that we can schedule in cooperation with the Center for Computational Language and Education Research (CLEAR), our affiliated center in LBB. We currently have four rooms that you can reserve directly for a meeting, office hours, study session, etc. using the EMS calendar system https://ems.colorado.edu: LBB 126 (max 15) and LBB 150 (max 4).
What this means to you:
- You will be able to go into the web calendar and reserve a space. We suggest you reserve in advance, as same-day reservations may be possible but are not guaranteed.
- Ethan McGinnis, Katlyn Econom, and Kris Stenzel have keys that can be given to you at the time you are using the space. These keys will need to be picked up right before using the space and returned after you are done using the space. If the person you picked up the key from is not around when your meeting is over, slip it under Ethan’s door (Hellems 222).
- Please respect the beginning and end time of your reservation so that others are not kept waiting. Also, please be aware that many of these rooms connect to other rooms and sound travels easily.
- If you create garbage while using the room, please empty it in the large trash bins on each floor of LBB or Hellems. Please leave the room clean. The janitorial staff does not go into the offices to clean up. It is easy to reserve a space https://ems.colorado.edu following the steps below. Let us know if you have questions.
Below are the steps to use the software to reserve a room:
- Log in on https://ems.colorado.edu/
- Click the Sign In blue button, it will take you to your email address/identikey login.
- Choose Book Now for LING LBB Rooms Request for the current semester
- Choose Date and Time

- Double click the green box and the room details will pop up and when you see the green box disappear you have selected that room
- Click on Next Step (upper left corner)

- Click on create reservation and you are done! But get the key to the room right before your meeting! All the rooms are locked.

Transportation & Parking
CU Boulder's Parking Services offers a variety of permit options for faculty, staff, and students. It is possible to get around Boulder (and campus) without a car using alternative options such as the bus or a bike. LING faculty and staff who wish to purchase a permit should fill out the Faculty and Staff Parking Permit Application and send it to the program's parking liaison, Ethan McGinnis.
Information about student permits is available on Parking Services Student Permit page.
Temporary permits are available to campus affiliates and visitors by phone at (303) 735-PARK (7275). Please have your license plate number available. For additional visitor parking options, view Parking Services Visitor Parking page.
