Introduction
A set of five gas discharge tubes are arranged such that when they are touched with a Tesla coil, their characteristically colored emission spectra are seen.
Supplies
Short List
- Gas discharge tube apparatus
Prior to Lecture (prep time ~ ? min.)
Assemble the following:
- Tesla coil
- Gas discharge tubes
To Conduct Demonstration
- Turn off lights in lecture room.
- Touch tubes with Tesla coil. Tubes will glow with different colors.
Safety
The Tesla coil can burn your skin on contact. The coil should not be adjusted or left plugged in when not in use.
