Colorado School of Mines (CO): The Colorado School of Mines Strength & Conditioning Department is actively seeking hard-working applicants for College-Credit internship positions working with all varsity sports within our program for the Spring Term 2024 (January 2nd – May 15th). Interns will have the ability to learn from a CSCCa Approved Mentor. The internship will also work with your department to fulfill credits for course work for qualifying interns.
The intent of the internship is to provide a semester of hands-on training to prepare the candidate to take on the next level position in strength and conditioning/sports science/athletic performance as either a graduate assistant or full-time coach.
Interns are expected to participate in a comprehensive and challenging educational program, including whiteboard discussion and hands-on experience in the following areas: program design, biomechanics, football, and Olympic program development, exercise instruction, Olympic lifting progressions and techniques, plyometrics, speed and agility techniques, energy system development, regeneration methods, nutritional basics, leadership and facility and athlete management.
Internship responsibilities will include various duties within the Colorado School of Mines Strength and Conditioning Department. Hours will vary throughout the semester and may include early morning, late afternoon hours, and weekends. Previous weight room or athletic coaching experience is a plus.

A. DEPARTMENT STANDARDS
PERFORM DEPARTMENT DUTIES IN A TIMELY AND EFFICIENT MANNER.
PERFORM CLINICAL JOB DUTIES.
1.0. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1.1 Check patient schedules and organize patient flow; prep charts ensuring updated health history information is current, locate lab and diagnostic studies, images and image reports.
1.2 Triage patient to ensure productive departmental flow.
1.3 Direct patient to proper exam/treatment room; prepare patient for examinations and other procedures; obtain patient history; assist patient as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, etc.
1.4 Record health history of patients; perform screenings per physician guidelines; note abnormal conditions for physician.
1.5 Prepare/drape patient for exam, sterile procedure, and injections of cortisone/anesthetic for joint injections. Prepare sterile preps on limb or body part as necessary for special procedures (i.e. joint aspirations, arthrogram image studies, etc.). Assist physician with various procedures; collecting specimens, relay instructions to patient/family; answer questions and provide pertinent information.
1.6 Obtain images/lab reports/diagnostic studies for physician review.
1.7 Document in the chart all activities/interventions, patient/family responses, medication dispensed/prescribed, and phone conversations/orders accurately in a timely manner in the patient record/chart.
1.8 Complete charts and visit tickets accurately according to clinic’s protocol.
1.9 Correlate physician’s calendar, surgery book, and PDA with meetings and appointments.
1.10 Contact pharmacy to order new prescriptions, receive incoming phone calls, faxes and check the eRx queue for prescription re-fill requests, notify patient and document in chart.
1.11 Schedule diagnostic tests complete authorization forms (procedure forms) for procedures (i.e. EMG, NC, MRI, CT Scan, bone scans, lab tests, etc.), have patient sign release form as needed for phone results, notify patient of results and schedule follow-up appointments as necessary.
1.12 Determine appropriate surgical/lab/physical therapy facility. Schedule surgical procedures via phone or fax to appropriate facility (hospital or ASC), schedule pre and post op appointments, instruct patient of the authorization process, complete and forward appropriate form to authorization and benefit coordinators, complete surgical packet with appropriate forms determined necessary for pre-op lab work, images, EKG prior to surgeries. Schedule appropriate physical therapy post-op appointments as needed, instruct patient of exercises, set up for required equipment (i.e. CPM machine), and complete appropriate forms for PT.
1.13 Prepare images, H&Ps and lab results for scheduled surgery date.
1.14 Notify hospital, ASC, or skilled nursing facility personnel of physician’s orders.
1.15 Perform venipuncture for PRP injections, collect, label and document lab specimens per physician direction.
1.16 Administer medications as appropriate; document in patient’s file.
1.17 Instruct patients and assist them in the performance of specific exercises as directed by the physician. 1.18 Teach patient the proper methods for crutch, cane and walker ambulation.
1.19 Clean rooms between procedures/patients. Organize and maintain medical supplies in exam rooms. Ensure all medications (oral and parenteral) are current. Ensure all injectable medications are dated when opened.
Return outdated medications to the Director of Clinic Operations/Site Lead for proper disposal.
1.20 Follow clinic policies for infection control in handling and disposing of infectious hazardous waste materials.
1.21 Understand and practice aseptic technique; set up and assist with minor surgical procedures; clean minor room following procedure.
1.22 Complete visit tickets; including with appropriate E& M, ICD-9, and CPT codes.
1.23 Receive and return phone calls.
1.24 Instruct patient in proper cast care including danger signs. Assist physician or Cast Tech with applying cast and have knowledge of basic preparation of cast application and removal.
1.25 Fulfill clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include: completing disability forms, receiving patient medical records, obtaining lab/images/diagnostic studies and reports/hospital notes/referral information, completing forms/requisitions, scheduling appointments, verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics, and managing charts to ensure information is complete and appropriate.
2.0 KNOWLEDGE:
2.1 Knowledge of health care field and medical specialty.
2.2 Knowledge of specific assisting tasks related to particular medical specialty.
2.3 Knowledge of information that must be conveyed to patients and families.
