A to Y Workshop: Directions

The A to Y Workshop will be held in the British Studies Room on the 5th floor of Norlin Library on the University of Colorado Boulder campus. Below are examples of ways to make maps and directions more accessible to blind and low vision users.

Attention Screen Reader Users

Google Maps navigation is generally accessible and useful in getting to campus and around on the main streets. It is less useful when giving walking directions around campus, particularly if the user cannot see the accompanying map. Here are directions to navigate a Google Map on a computer with a keyboard. This can be helpful for general orientation, but it is not specific enough to show the precise location of one building with respect to another.

Written Directions to Norlin Library and British Studies Room

18^th runs more or less north south and Euclid runs east west
Norlin Library is on the west side of the intersection of 18^th and Colorado
Euclid and 18^th make a T intersection with Euclid coming from the west and ending into 18^th
Walk north on 18^th from Euclid for the distance of approximately a block, until 18^th ends
Colorado comes from the east and also ends at this intersection
Coming from the south on 18^th, Norlin library will be to the left
You have to go down slightly into a plaza area
The building and all the doors go into Norlin

Broadway runs more or less north south
Norlin Library is east of Broadway
There is a bike path that runs along the east side of Broadway, with the east side of the path designated for pedestrians
Euclid is the closest stop where all regional and local buses will stop
Pleasant is the closest stop on the east side and College is the closest stop on the west side where all local buses will stop
There is a sidewalk that runs east/west from Broadway to Norlin
It is north of College and Euclid, and south of Pleasant
It runs along the north side of Norlin Quad, a large grassy area
When you find the correct path, it leads directly to the wide set of stairs on the west facing side of Norlin

British Studies is on the fifth or top floor of Norlin
The elevator will only go to the fifth floor when British Studies is open
Enter the first set of doors into Norlin, then turn left to enter the second set
Go forward for about 10 yards
On the right there will be an elevator and a set of stairs, elevator to the right and stairs to the left
You currently are on the second floor, and there is something at every half level
A women’s restroom that is not wheelchair accessible is on the next half level up
A men’s restroom that is not wheelchair accessible is one and a half levels up
The elevator opens directly into British Studies and the stairs end just outside the doorway

You have to use the stairs and elevator on the west side of the building, which you cannot access directly from the east side
After you enter Norlin, go left through either of a couple of doorways
To the right is a stairway to take you to the second floor
At the top of the stairs, on the right is a wall with men’s and women’s wheelchair accessible restrooms
Follow the wall and then continue straight across an open area with tables, chairs, etc.
Eventually you will come to the front circulation desk, which is in front of the west facing doors
Continue until you find a set of stairs on the left and an elevator on the right
British Studies is on the fifth floor
The elevator will only go to the fifth floor when British Studies is open
The stairs have access to various options at every half level
If you go up one half level, there is a women’s restroom that is not wheel chair accessible
If you go up one and a half levels you will find a men’s restroom that is not wheelchair accessible
The elevator opens directly into British Studies, while the top of the stairs ends just outside the door into British Studies
