Annual Scholarship Fundraising Event
Livestream on the Art & Art History YouTube Channel

Join us for a one-hour Livestream event on Thursday, December 2 at 5:30 PM MST. Please register by clicking on the RSVP link below; we would love to see you there. At the conclusion of the meeting, attendees who are registered will be entered into a raffle for works generously donated by department faculty or staff.

You will hear directly from students who have been impacted by studying in our department, as well as from faculty who have devoted their careers to teaching emerging artists and art historians. We will be sharing work by students, alumni, and faculty and will close the evening with a raffle of works donated by faculty or staff members, including the piece by Alvin Gregorio featured above.

Day without Art

ENDURING CARE

The University of Colorado Boulder’s Stan Brakhage Center for the Media Arts and LGBTQ Studies Program are proud to partner with Visual AIDS for Day With(out) Art 2021 by presenting ENDURING CARE, a video program highlighting strategies of community care within the ongoing HIV epidemic. The program features newly commissioned work by Katherine Cheairs, Cristóbal Guerra, Danny Kilbride, Abdul-Aliy A. Muhammad and Uriah Bussey, Beto Pérez, Steed Taylor, and J Triangular and the Women’s Video Support Project.

From histories of harm reduction and prison activism to the long-term effects of HIV medication, ENDURING CARE centers stories of collective care, mutual aid, and solidarity while pointing to the negligence of governments and non-profits. The program’s title suggests a dual meaning, honoring the perseverance and commitment of care workers yet also addressing the potential for harm from medications and healthcare providers. ENDURING CARE disrupts the assumption that an epidemic can be solved with pharmaceuticals alone, recasting community work as a lasting form of medicine.

Two on-campus screenings will be offered to students, faculty, and staff of the CU Boulder community:

Wednesday, December 1, 2021— Day With(out) Art: Cinematic and Artistic Expressions of AIDS Activism

  • Time: 4:00pm-6:00pm MST
  • Location: The Stan Brakhage Center for the Media Arts, ATLAS 311
  • ENDURING CARE Screening + Discussion. Following the ENDURING CARE screening, acclaimed artist, experimental filmmaker, and CU professor Jeanne Liotta, along with MFA student McKenzie Blake, will draw connections to ‘zine projects they made during the MFA seminar, “Art & Film in the AIDS Era.”
  • This screening is limited to 15 attendees.
  • This program is free, but registration is required. (Register at https://www.colorado.edu/lgbtq/enduring-care-registration)

Thursday, December 2, 2021 — ENDURING CARE Screening plus Q&A/Discussion

  • Time: 4:00pm-5:30pm MST
  • Location: Solomon Film Screening Room, Atlas 102
  • This program is free and no registration is required.

Alumni News

David Ellsworth, CU Boulder, Art Alumnus

David Ellsworth (MFA’73) Received the Smithsonian Institute’s 2021 Visionary Award

David Ellsworth (Art’71; MFA’73) hovers over the lathe for hours at a time. Wood shavings catch in his beard, fly over his shoulder and pile on the studio floor as he masterfully turns and scoops a dense maple burl until its form is as light and hollow as an eggshell. He invented this technique some 50 years ago and has taught it ever since.

Ellsworth is an artist, teacher and community builder. His work is found in the permanent collections of 44 museums and numerous private collections worldwide. He is a fellow and former trustee of the American Craft Council and has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Pew Fellowship for the Arts. This year, he received perhaps the ultimate distinction: the Smithsonian Institution’s Visionary Award.

To Ellsworth, the honor was more than just an award.

“Recognitions can come in many forms, from a simple smile to a museum acquisition,” said Ellsworth. “It is an acknowledgment that the intrinsic value of an art object is not the price, but the process. Recognitions acknowledge a maker’s motivations. While the object supports the ego, the process supports the soul.” — Read More —
