Abstract:
Many modern scientific applications, such as those in machine learning and signal processing, are benefiting from data sets of unprecedented size. At the same time, the very size of the data make processing them more challenging. This talk is about extracting information from the data, and covers two aspects: modeling the information via optimization, and solving the optimization problem. We highlight some applications in sparse recovery, matrix completion and quantum tomography, and discuss corresponding optimization algorithms.
