In Memoriam, Harvey Segur

September 12, 1942 – July 16, 2026

Harvey Segur was a Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Colorado Boulder and one of the four founding faculty of the Department of Applied Mathematics. A leading figure in the study of nonlinear waves, solitons, and water waves, Harvey helped make APPM an international center for physical applied mathematics, the use of mathematics to describe the fundamental phenomena of the natural world. He served as the department's second chair from 2000 to 2003 and was a devoted teacher and mentor to generations of students. His excellence in research and teaching was recognized with the President's Teaching Scholar award in 1998, the Distinguished Research Lecture in 2005, and the Hazel Barnes Prize in 2011, the university's highest faculty honor. The department he helped build, and the many students and colleagues he inspired, carry his legacy forward.
