6 tips to stay healthy while traveling
Heading home, taking a trip or visiting friends over break? Whether you're traveling by car, plane or bus, a little preparation can help you stay healthy along the way.
Here are six tips to help you take care of yourself before and during your trip.
Get up to date on vaccinations
Before heading out for fall break, check that you're up to date on recommended vaccinations, including your annual flu shot. Vaccines can help reduce your risk of getting sick or experiencing severe illness while traveling.
CU Boulder students can get a flu shot at campus clinics or schedule an appointment at Wardenburg through the MyCUHealth Portal. Keep in mind that vaccines take time to provide protection, so it's best to get vaccinated before your travel plans.
Pack your health essentials
A little preparation can help you feel your best while you're away. Before leaving, make sure you have:
- Prescription medications and any other medications you regularly use.
- Hand sanitizer and tissues.
- A reusable water bottle.
- Your health insurance information.
If you're flying, keep essential medications in your carry-on or personal bag so they're easy to access.
Make a plan if you're feeling sick
If you're feeling sick before your trip, consider how traveling could affect your recovery and the people around you. Depending on your symptoms, postponing your trip may be the best option.
If you need to travel while recovering from an illness, consider wearing a well-fitting mask, practicing good hygiene and taking other precautions to help prevent spreading germs.

Prioritize sleep
Traveling can disrupt your usual sleep schedule, especially when you're changing time zones. Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night and give yourself time to rest when needed.
Getting enough sleep can support your immune system and help you feel your best throughout your trip.
Stay hydrated
Long travel days can make it easy to forget to drink water, especially when you're spending hours in a car, plane or bus.
Bring a reusable water bottle and refill it when you can. Drinking water regularly throughout your trip can help you stay hydrated and maintain your energy.
Practice good hygiene while traveling
Airports, bus stations and other busy travel areas can expose you to germs. A few healthy habits can help reduce your risk of getting sick and spreading illness.
- Wash your hands with soap and water, especially after using the bathroom and before eating.
- Use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol when soap and water aren't available.
- Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
Wherever you're headed, these habits can help you enjoy a healthier fall break.
