How to make your mark and discover your path

This month offers a chance for you to explore what truly sparks your interest, whether that’s through campus involvement, service, research or stepping up as a leader. Every hobby, club or class you dive into can be a steppingstone to discovering your purpose and connecting your passions to meaningful plans after graduation.

Having a mentor can be a game-changer during your time in college. A good mentor can support you as you work toward your goals, answer your questions and give you encouragement if things get challenging.

If you’re interested in mentorship this semester, here are some simple steps to help you find the right mentor for your college journey.

Your Journey, Continued

Taking advantage of the resources, opportunities and programs available during your second or third year of college can empower you to deepen your learning, grow your network and gain clarity about your academic and professional path. By engaging fully with these offerings, you set yourself up for lasting success both at CU Boulder and beyond.

Career Services offers tailored support for second- and third-year students as you start to define your professional interests and prepare for life after college. From resumes and interview prep to career fairs and internship connections, career advisors can help you explore paths, set goals and gain the skills needed to stand out. Engaging with Career Services at this stage in your collegiate journey can give you a head start on networking, discovering your strengths and confidently moving toward the future you envision.

Student Employment

Working on campus during your second or third year can be a valuable way to develop professional skills, earn income and connect with fellow Buffs. On-campus jobs often offer flexible schedules that accommodate your classes, allowing you to prioritize academics while gaining experience. By taking on these roles, you can build rapport with faculty and staff, strengthen your resume and discover new interests or career directions that complement your studies.

Leadership Opportunities

Taking the initiative to pursue leadership opportunities during your second or third year can be transformative—both in shaping your college journey and preparing you for the future. Leadership roles, whether in student organizations, student boards, research projects or volunteer programs, help you grow essential skills such as communication, organization, problem-solving and collaboration. These experiences allow you to broaden your perspective and contribute meaningfully to the campus community. Leadership experience can also open doors to networking connections, references, and future internships or jobs.

Service Learning

Service learning during your second or third year connects your academic studies with real-world experience by combining coursework with community projects. Working alongside non-profits or civic organizations lets you apply classroom concepts, develop critical thinking, and gain skills valued by employers and graduate schools. Service learning also builds empathy, broadens perspectives, and helps form meaningful connections, supporting both personal growth and professional development.
