Requirements for Admission

  • GPA of 3.0 or above
    • Admitted students typically have a GPA in the range from 3.0 – 3.5
  • Education – completion of one option below:
    • BA in SLHS
    • BA in a field other than SLHS with completion of 24 credits of “leveling” coursework in SLHS (listed below)
    • A SLHS student in the last semester of their senior year
      • CU students applying for fall 2021 or spring 2022:
        • Students may take no more than two prerequisite SLHS courses (see list below) concurrently with the SLPA internship and course
      • CU students applying for fall 2022 and beyond:
        • Students may take no more than one prerequisite SLHS course (see list below) concurrently with the SLPA internship and course
        • Students must take SLHS 4502: Language Disorders and SLHS 4512: Speech Disorders before enrolling in the SLPA program
      • Non-CU students applying for any semester:
        • Students may take no more than one prerequisite SLHS course (see list below) concurrently with the SLPA internship and course
        • Students must take SLHS 4502: Language Disorders and SLHS 4512: Speech Disorders before enrolling in the SLPA program
  • Transportation 
    • Students should have reliable transportation, as placements will be outside of the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD)

Prerequisites or “Leveling” Coursework

The courses listed below are offered by the SLHS Department of CU Boulder.  Equivalent courses from other universities will also meet this requirement, if approved by the program director.  These requirements are consistent with the Colorado Department of Education SLPA Authorization. Students may take no more than one prerequisite concurrently with the SLPA internship and course. Students must take SLHS 4502: Language Disorders and SLHS 4512: Speech Disorders before enrolling in the SLPA program.

LING 3100: Language Sound Structures (3 credits) or SLHS 3006: Phonetics (3 credits)

SLHS 3106: Hearing Science (3 credits)

SLHS 3116: Anatomy, Physiology, and Science of Speech (3 credits)

SLHS 4502: Language Disorders Across the Lifespan (3 credits)

SLHS 4512: Speech Disorders Across the Lifespan (3 credits)

SLHS 4560: Language Development (3 credits)

SLHS 4704: Audiological Evaluation (3 credits)

SLHS 4714: Audiological Rehabilitation (3 credits)

Optional: SLHS 4918:  Introduction to Clinical Practice (2 credits) - requires documentation of 25 hours of observation of ASHA-certified SLPs

  • Students are required to have 25 observation hours completed by the time they finish the SLPA program

Application Procedures

To apply for the online SLPA certificate program, applicants must submit the online application, which includes:

  • Letter of intent
  • Resume
  • Unofficial transcripts from each school attended
  • Contact information for two recommenders (one of whom must be a former faculty member or instructor).
    • Note: Recommenders will be directed towards the online recommendation form only once the application has been submitted, so please plan accordingly. Applicants can manually download a copy of the recommendation form to send to the recommender. Recommenders should send letters and the form to SLPA@colorado.edu. Please note that the two letters of recommendation must be received by the deadline in order for the application to be reviewed by the SLPA admissions committee. 
  • Updated signed log/documentation of number of ASHA MA-SLP/AuD CCC observation hours.
    • Note: additional hours can be obtained while enrolled in the SLPA Certification semester, with a final minimum total of 25 ASHA CCC hours documented.

The application for Spring 2022 is now open. The deadline to apply is October 25, 2021.

Only completed applications with all required materials received by the deadline will be reviewed by the SLPA committee.  Students are encouraged to apply early to give ample time to find an internship placement.
