CU in the Rockies

Spend time backpacking and getting to know other incoming students in the Rocky Mountains! This trip starts with activities to help you get to know your group before heading out for a scenic float trip on the Colorado River. Afterwards you will head to the Flat Top mountains for an unforgettable five days of backpacking. No prior experience needed.

Mandatory pre-trip meeting:
All participants are required to attend a virtual pre-trip meeting (parents/guardians welcome!). Pre-trip meetings for CU in the Rockies will be held on the following dates: 

  • July 14 | 5-5:45 p.m. MST
  • July 15 | 6-6:45 p.m. MST
  • July 22 | 5-5:45 p.m. MST

Registration Process

Step 1: Complete an interest form.

Step 2:Once we receive your interest form submission, we will send you an email with registration and payment details (please allow three to five business days).

Note: Payment must be completed to secure a spot on the trip.

The below itinerary outlines the components of our CU in the Rockies trip. This itinerary is subject to change due to severe weather or public health ordinance.

Sample Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and introduction

  • Arrive at the CU Recreation Center (1835 Pleasant St.) and check in at the Large Ice Rink Overlook room.
  • Meet your trip leaders and group members.
  • Participate in fun activities to get to know your group.
  • Spend the evening packing gear and enjoying activities around the Rec.
  • Camp under the stars on the rooftop tennis courts.

Day 2: Float trip

  • Drive to the scenic Colorado headwaters.
  • Enjoy a float trip with other Rockies groups.
  • Practice skills for the backpacking portion of the trip.
  • Prepare for the next phase of your adventure.

Day 3–7: Backpacking

  • Explore the rugged terrain of the Rocky Mountains.
  • Learn important backcountry skills like cooking and navigation.
  • Get to know other students on the trip.

Day 8: Final Campfire Celebration

  • Hike out and drive to your last campsite at Green Mountain Reservoir.
  • Celebrate with a campfire and commemorate the memories made.
