CU Boulder Bike News - July 2022

July means hotter weather, vacations, and a quiet campus, but there is also some exciting transportation news to share. In this month’s edition, we are going to step a bit outside the bike realm and share some news about other modes of transportation and transportation in general. We hope you enjoy the read!

BTWD '22 Follow Up

This past month Colorado celebrated Bike to Work Day, including a month’s worth of activities to promote more sustainable transportation options. CU Boulder hosted a couple of breakfast stations on Main Campus where over 500 cyclists stopped by to grab burritos and free swag. You can keep the spirit of Bike to Work Day alive all summer by participating in the Way to Go monthly challenge!

Buffalo Bicycle Classic '22

Since 2003, the Buffalo Bicycle Classic has raised $3.4 million dollars in scholarships for CU students. With nine routes and one virtual ride, the Buffalo Bicycle Classic is an experience for everyone. Find your favorite and register for the September 11th event today! Use code CHANGELIVES for $15 off registration (valid through 9/1/22).  

If you don’t want to join for the ride, but still want to support the event, CU Transportation Services has set up a fundraiser to help raise money for future scholarships: fundraiser link.

Bike Fest 2022 Date Announced

It’s official–CU Bike Fest returns on September 1st, 2022 from 2-7 p.m. Stop by Farrand field to enjoy some free food, shirts, music, and exciting games! The event will wrap up with CU’s annual used bike sale.

E-Bike Rebates

  • Longmont: Longmont Power & Communications is now offering residents a $500 rebate on the purchase of a new e-bike, increasing to a $1,000 rebate for income-qualified customers.
  • Denver will release 2,000 more e-bike vouchers for July and even more throughout summer to expand popular program (The Colorado Sun)

Survey: E-Bikes on City Open Space?

The city invites input on a staff evaluation of e-bikes on city open space and a preliminary staff proposal to allow them on 34 miles of trails. Current city policy prohibits e-biking on any city open space trails. Click on the article title to share input before August 8.

Interested in learning more about transportation projects near campus, including the 30th and Colorado underpass? The City of Boulder is hosting a virtual info session on July 20th at 6 p.m. and all are invited. Learn more about the projects and register by clicking on the article title.

Olde Stage Road Reconstruction

Safety
Starting July 18, Phase II of the Old Stage Road reconstruction will begin. This phase involves a repaving project and additional drainage improvements. Construction should be completed by the end of October 2022. Expect single lane closures and delays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday-Friday. Because the road will be milled, cycling conditions will not be ideal and alternate routes are advised.

Annual Summer Paving of County Roads

Paving operations on Boulder county roads began on Tuesday, July 12. Operations will run from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and is expected to last until the end of August. Below is the list of road segments that will be paved (in order):

  • 79th Street between CO Highway 52 and Niwot Road 
  • Monarch Road between 79th Street and the Diagonal Highway 
  • 73rd Street between the Diagonal Highway and Niwot Road 
  • Niwot Road between the Diagonal Highway and 73rd Street 
  • 63rd Street between Jay Road and the City of Boulder limits 
  • 2nd Avenue in Niwot 
  • Valmont Road between Boulder Creek and 61st Street 

Work on each segment is expected to last one week, other than 2nd Avenue which should require two to three days. Flaggers will help guide travelers safely through construction zones, but expect delays and please drive with caution. Avoid construction zones if possible; click on the article title to see a map.
