Deputy Director, Communications & Education, NASA JPL • PLC 1976

Degree(s): Journalism

Professional background, interests and expertise: I spent 30+ years working as a radio news/talk program director and digital news manager, then five years ago I pivoted to being a science communicator with NASA and JPL. I found the skills to be highly transferrable, so can mentor students in both journalism and corporate/science communications. I work with a team of writers, artists, social media experts, web designers, and video creators, so can discuss a variety of platforms and creative means to engage audiences with science and space storytelling. I have served on the CMCI board for one year, and have enjoyed mentorship opportunities within the college.

Hours available for mentoring per month: 2-3

Best professional advice: Experience matters! Internships and hands-on experience are essential in this field, as is networking and relationship-building. There are experiences to be found, even during the pandemic.
