Science Teacher at Roy Junior High School, Ogden, Utah • PLC 2009

Degree(s): BA: MCDB with a minor in Biochemistry MA: Secondary Science Education

Professional background, interests and expertise: I am currently a biology teacher at Roy High School in Roy, Utah. I love to tell stories, especially about cool science! As a teacher, I'm passionate about providing all of my students access to the knowledge and skills they need to make good decisions about caring for their own health and that of our planet. I balance this work with a lot of time outside in the mountains with my family and creative endeavors like writing short stories, knitting, sewing, and baking.

Hours available for mentoring per month: 4-6

Best professional advice: Sometimes when you're in a major it seems like there are only a couple of career options open to you. I know that when I was studying MCDB I felt like every single person I knew was either going into research or into a medical field. It's just not true! There are a lot of options available where you can still enjoy working with the content you love; you just might have to be a little creative in finding those options.

What does mentorship mean to you? Mentorship is a relationship built on self-reflection and a desire for growth for both people. As a mentor, my job is to first listen so I can understand the potential and dreams of my mentee. Only then can I offer my own stories and values as something of use!
