Brittney Manzagol
Category Activation Manager at Danone North America (DanoneWave) • PLC 2010

Degree(s): BA Environmental Studies, Leadership Studies Minor - MS in Agriculture from Washington State University (in progress)

Professional background, interests and expertise: I am passionate about the food industry. I love being part of it because I think it is at a fascinating intersection of policy, health, and environmental sustainability. I love that I am able to have a job that nourishes people and can also because environmentally responsible. The industry itself is fast-paced and extremely dynamic, so it also plays well to my competitive side. Plus, being in consumer packaged goods is rewarding because it is so tangible; you get to see your products in the stores!

Hours available for mentoring per month: 2 hours (one student preferably)

Best professional advice: My advice to environmental studies majors is to not think too singularly about what you can do with this degree. It is extremely broad and can be taken in many directions. Don't be afraid to pursue business applications with this degree. When sustainability is integrated effectively in a company, it is profoundly powerful.

My advice for students interested in the food industry is to go for it! While in college, make sure to find opportunities to work in the food industry. College is the perfect time to get free training and explore what professions exist. One of the quotes that inspires me every day is by Mark Tawin, "The best way to get ahead is to get started."  Pursue your interests! It's okay if you try something and realize it's not for you because you will have a better understanding of where to (not) take your career and can try a different direction. Plus, there are many different positions you won’t realize exist until you get your first job or internship.
