PLC Board of Advocates Application
The purpose of the PLC Board of Advocates (BoA) is to support the vision, mission, programs, students and alumni of the Presidents Leadership Class (“PLC”) at the University of Colorado Boulder, and to:
a) Advocate for PLC programs, projects, and students to increase the visibility, vitality, and utility of the PLC program;
b) Promote and generate financial and other resource development through fundraising and related strategies from corporate, foundation, and individual private gifts;
c) Support the development of an active and engaged alumni community; and,
d) Advise PLC staff and faculty on policies, strategies, and programming.
The PLC Board of Advocates is comprised of no less than thirteen (13) and no more than twenty-five (25) members. BoA members are elected to serve one, three (3) year term, renewable for up to three (3) terms.
Expectations
PLC Board of Advocates members will give of their time in the following ways:
- Attend at least 75% of board meetings (quarterly), committee meetings, and special events.
- Participate on at least one committee:
- Executive Committee
- Fundraising Committee
- Nomination and Governance Committee
- Other Ad Hoc Committees or support
- Participate in the Board of Advocates onboarding including student engagement and PLC Program participation (refer to Board of Advocates Assimilation process)
- Participate in outreach to funders
- Assist in identifying potential donors and facilitating contact with staff
- Assist staff with donor stewardship by thanking and recognizing donors
- Help identify, recruit, and welcome new board members
- Act in the best interests of the organization and in compliance with ethical and legal standards and disclose any conflicts of interest.
- Stay informed about what’s going on in the organization, questions, and request information, will participate in and take responsibility for making decisions on issues, policies and other board matters.
- Work in good faith with staff and other board members as partners toward the achievement of our goals.
PLC Board of Advocate members will give of their talent in the following ways:
- Provide expertise to benefit board decisions and organizational operations
- Provide advice to management and overall operations of PLC
- Participate in the setting of policies and strategic goals in accordance with the mission of the Board
PLC Board of Advocate members will give of their treasure in the following ways:
- Make a meaningful personal gift annually to exhibit your belief in PLC’s mission and to demonstrate 100% board support in grant applications
- Facilitate a contribution from your business or corporation
- Purchase tickets to PLC events, personally or through your business
- Invite other individuals or businesses to support PLC by attending events and/or making a contribution
To carry out these responsibilities, the Board meets quarterly throughout the year. In addition to attendance at Board meetings, you may be required to participate on committees or support the Board in other ways as defined by the Director. The Board is comprised of up to 25 members elected annually. Term limits are 3 years. Members may serve a maximum of three consecutive 3-year terms.
Nomination/Applications
Nominations/Applications received by April 17, 2023 will be reviewed by the Nominating & Governance Committee of the PLC Board of Advocates. By May 10, 2022, the Board of Advocates will select the slate of Board members to put forward for election by the Board. Onboarding will happen in the summer before the Quarter one meeting the next year.
2023-24 Board Composition & Criteria
As you consider board service, please remember the following:
- The distribution of Board members’ competence and experience varies over time, reflecting the needs of the organization and the composition of the membership.
- To balance the experience of continuing Board members, we are approaching the candidate selection process in 2022 with a particular focus on:
- Careers in the Sciences (specifically – medicine, mental health, research, and potentially engineering)
- Black, Indigenous, and People Of Color members
- Non-PLC Alumni members
- Those with a passion to help with fundraising.
- Other considerations include female/non-binary members or younger alumni members.
- Candidates with prior PLC engagement via interviews, mentorship, or educational participation are highly encouraged to apply!
