Encourage your student to make the most of their college experience
College is about more than what happens in the classroom. Getting involved on campus can help students make friends, explore their interests, build valuable skills and feel more connected to their college experience.
Whether your student is eager to jump in or still figuring out where they fit, there are many ways to explore opportunities at CU Boulder.
Build skills beyond the classroom
Student organizations, campus jobs, volunteer opportunities and leadership roles give students a chance to learn by doing. Through these experiences, students can practice communication, teamwork, problem-solving and leadership while gaining experience they can use in internships, jobs and life after college.
Getting involved can also help students discover what they enjoy—and sometimes what they don’t. Trying different activities can help them learn more about their interests, strengths and future goals.
Find community on campus
For many students, getting involved is also an important way to build connections and find a sense of belonging.
CU Boulder offers student organizations and activities focused on everything from academics, culture and the arts to recreation, service, sustainability and professional interests. Participating gives students opportunities to meet people outside their classes and connect around shared interests.
It may take some time for your student to find the people and activities that feel right. Encourage them to stay curious and try something new, even if they don't know anyone else participating.
Explore ways to get involved
If your student isn't sure where to begin, encourage them to explore a few of these options:
- Join a student organization: Students can browse BuffConnect to find organizations based on their interests, identities, academic programs, hobbies and more.
- Volunteer: Service Learning & Impact in Community Engagement (SLICE) connects students with opportunities to serve and engage with the local community.
- Work on campus: Campus jobs can help students earn money while building professional skills, gaining experience and meeting other Buffs.
- Explore sustainability: The Environmental Center offers programs and hands-on opportunities for students interested in sustainability and environmental action.
- Learn and connect: The Center for Cultural Connections & Community offers programs and opportunities that help students explore identity, build connections and learn from different perspectives.
- Develop leadership skills: Students can pursue leadership positions, participate in leadership programs or get involved with CU Student Government.
Encourage balance
Getting involved can enrich your student’s college experience, but more isn’t always better. Students need time for classes, studying, relationships, sleep and taking care of themselves.
Encourage your student to start with one or two opportunities that genuinely interest them rather than feeling like they need to do everything. As they become more comfortable with their schedule, they can decide whether they have time and energy to take on more.
If your student feels overwhelmed, you can help by asking what commitments feel meaningful to them and what they might be able to let go.
Help your student take the first step
Students don’t need to have their entire college experience figured out right away. Sometimes getting involved starts with something as simple as attending an event, visiting a student organization meeting or talking with someone about an opportunity that sounds interesting.
You can encourage your student to explore what’s available and choose experiences that feel right for them. Each new experience can be a chance to meet someone, learn something or discover an interest they didn’t know they had.
