Suzanne "Zan" Jones
- Executive Director, Eco-Cycle
I have devoted my career to advancing environmental and climate policy in pursuit of a more sustainable and equitable future on this beautiful planet. I’m in my 12th year as Executive Director of Eco-Cycle, one of the nation’s oldest and largest non-profit recyclers. I was honored to serve eight years on the Boulder City Council from 2011 to 2019, the last four as Boulder’s Mayor. Previously, I spent an amazing 16 years with The Wilderness Society, leading efforts to protect our nation’s public lands in Colorado and Utah. I also did a stint in Washington, D.C. working for the National Wildlife Federation and as a congressional staffer in the U.S. House of Representatives. I have an M.S. in Policy from the University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources and a B.S. in Natural Resources from Cornell University. I’m an avid outdoorswoman and ultimate frisbee player and am learning the banjo.
My advice to students...
The happiest people are those who choose to spend their lives doing meaningful work to make the world a better place, and whose vocation is in full alignment with their values, principles, and what they love to do. Be one of those people! Spend your precious time and energy doing something that is worthwhile and that brings you joy. Though these are troubled and challenging times, the silver lining is that the world needs you now more than ever – to be(come) your best self and put your shoulder to the wheel.
