  • Former Colorado Senate President, current Public Affairs Consultant
After graduating from CU-Boulder I cofounded a nonprofit organization called New Era Colorado, which aims to get young people engaged in the political process. After serving as the executive director for a decade, I left and ran for the State Senate. During my tenure in the legislature I served as the Majority Leader and the Senate President. After being term-limited, I recently started my own independent consulting firm where I advise on public affairs, political strategy, and fundraising. Oh, and I also co-own and operate a cocktail bar up in the small historic mining town of Silver Plume, Colorado.

My advice to students...

At times I've asked myself "what type of ancestor do I want to be?" This question helps me think about how I will be remembered by future descendants and helps me identify my purpose in times of transition or turbulence. We often get caught up in day-to-day tasks or the rat race of wanting to make more money, get promoted, etc., but we often forget to slow down and think about the mark you will make and the way you'll be remembered. For me, my north star is to be remembered as someone who was of service to his community and family.
