I'm a scientist-turned-public leader who brings empathy, systems thinking, and pragmatic dreaming to every space I enter. After leading a neuroscience research facility at CU Boulder for over a decade, I joined Boulder's City Council in 2021. As a Boulder City Councilmember, I have advanced policy related to climate resilience, worker and renter protections, and democratic governance. I'm known for making complex policy accessible, uplifting community voices, and mentoring with emotional candor and strategic clarity. I believe leadership is primarily about having the courage and humility to learn in public. I've mentored hundreds of students during my 30-year science career, and I'm excited to support students in the Leadership Program.

My advice to students...

Leadership is about showing up, listening deeply, and building power with others. The best leaders make creating more leaders their primary focus. My path has included unexpected loss, public scrutiny, and moments of doubt, but also profound connection, courage, and growth. You don’t need to be fearless to lead; you just need to care enough to act, even when it’s hard. Ask questions. Own your mistakes. Surround yourself with people who challenge and uplift you. And remember that systems change when people do. Whether you’re organizing a campaign, navigating a lab, or speaking up in a meeting, your voice matters. Leadership is a practice, not a title, and it’s most powerful when grounded in humility, purpose, and love. You already have what it takes. Keep showing up.
