I serve on the Boulder City Council, where I focus on housing affordability, climate resilience, transportation, and good governance. My professional background is rooted in science and education. I earned a degree in Astronomy and Astrophysics from CU Boulder and spent nearly a decade at the Fiske Planetarium as an astronomer and Education Programs Manager. During that time, I collaborated on NASA-funded research and produced shows that are still used in planetariums worldwide.

Beyond my academic and civic work, I helped establish the nation’s first Dark Sky Reserve in Central Idaho, reflecting my commitment to environmental stewardship. I also work as a photographer and science education consultant, combining storytelling with advocacy.

Interesting fact: I led the successful “Our Mayor–Our Choice” campaign that brought Ranked Choice Voting to Boulder. I live in South Boulder with my wife and two children, who continually inspire my public service.

My advice to students...

Leadership is not about always having the loudest voice in the room—it’s about listening first, then acting with clarity and purpose. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned on Boulder City Council is that progress often comes through collaboration, even when it means compromise. Don’t be afraid to take tough stands, but also don’t be afraid to seek common ground, lasting change is built on both conviction and cooperation.

I also encourage you to stay grounded in values and evidence. For me, that means letting science, data, and community voices guide decisions rather than ideology or pressure. Leadership is most effective when it is transparent, pragmatic, and accountable.

Finally, remember that resilience matters. Not every initiative will succeed the first time, but persistence, humility, and adaptability will carry you forward. Lead with integrity, and you’ll earn the trust that makes true change possible.
