I was a psychology undergraduate at the University of Michigan.  Being in an honors program was life changing.  I realized I wanted a career in research. My Ph.D. thesis at Columbia was on infant speech perception with field work in Kenya.  My first job was as a research scientist at Bell Laboratories in NJ where there were very few women.  I became a manager at 30 (again few women) and assumed larger managerial roles in computer science research and development. I was part of a successful start up here in Boulder.  I retired 10 years ago and devote my time to music.  I play the piano a lot, taking weekly lessons.  I am chair of the CU College of Music Advisory Board. I am an extrovert but enjoy time to read and reflect.

My advice to students...

Hard work matters.  Success is rarely won without effort, focus, and strong interpersonal relationships.  Don't be afraid to ask for help when floundering, particularly in math.  You learn as much or more from your peers.  Cherish those relationships.  Let your career evolve.  You often don't know enough or haven't spent enough time in the field to know what is going to excite you.  Humor can save the day--don't be afraid to laugh and
 make others laugh.
