Hernán Villanueva
- Multiphysics Simulation & Computational Design Optimization Research Scientist

Hi! I was born in Peru and immigrated to the U.S. on a full-tuition scholarship for my undergraduate studies, later earning a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from CU Boulder. I've called Boulder home for over a decade. I now work as a researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where I develop and code numerical methods to tackle complex multiphysics problems in flow dynamics and advanced manufacturing using high-performance computing. I like to describe my work as a mix of math, physics, and software – and I truly love it!
Outside the lab, I stay involved in civic life. I served on Boulder's Environmental Advisory Board, where I helped update energy codes and founded the Front Range Sustainability Council, connecting 13 regional boards. I also write opinion pieces on local issues as part of the Daily Camera's Community Editorial Board and currently serve on Boulder's Transportation Advisory Board.
My advice to students...
