Emily Walsh
- Leadership Development Program Manager, Magnite
I was born and raised in Rhode Island and got my Bachelor's at Syracuse University in upstate New York; I'm an East Coaster at heart. I have spent the majority of my professional career working with students and recently transitioned to the corporate sector. Regardless of my role, I have always valued human-connection and relationships to the highest degree. My two greatest passions in life are leadership and athletics. I have been able to hybridize these things in several different ways over the past decade or so through coaching collegiate level women's ice hockey, volunteering for Special Olympics Colorado as a coach and coach facilitator, and as an athlete myself. I also had the unique opportunity to teach a class called Leadership through Sports at CU Boulder. Here are some of the lessons I've learned so far:
- Working with eighth graders, I've learnd so much about perspective. The way we interact with the world varies so much from person-to-person and it is important to never lose sight of that.
- Working with college-students, I've learned about the potential for us to change our world. Young people have an immense amount of drive and desire to do good for others and are constantly seeking ways to make that happen.
- Working with members of my greater community, I've learned that there is so much goodness in the world. A smile and a friendly conversation can you lead you to places you never thought possible!
- Working with folks in ad-tech, I am learning about the need to think much bigger picture and how we all have an incredible role to play in the success of an organization.
I am an inquisitive person who wants to truly get to know everyone I meet! I love to travel and learn, no matter where or what.
My advice to students...
So much of leadership is about showing up for people, teams, and organizations in the most authentic way possible. All of your life's experiences - good and bad - have shaped you into who you are, and will continue to do so. Being open to learning about yourself and about life from those experiences is what will enable you to also grow as a leader. People feel empowered to be themselves and to bring all of their attributes forward when they feel safe and supported. The more you can be YOU, the better our world will be.
