My advice to students...
1. READ EVERYTHING. Keep your brain in the habit of learning so you continue to work the muscles that problem solve and innovate. As an entrepreneur, you will always need this skill. Furthermore, if you are mentally in shape, making big business decisions become emotionally easier.
2. DON'T STOP LEARNING. Your undergraduate degree is just the beginning of your professional life. Plan to continue your education long after graduating. Build in continuing education opportunities (i.e. a Master's Degree and professional certifications) into your professional vision board. Your career trajectory will skyrocket and doors will open.
3. CAREERS ARE BUILT ON SAYING YES. You know what you want to do with your life but you have no idea how life will give you the opportunities. You have to say yes to whatever crosses your path. Careers are no longer ladders, they are jungle gyms with a collection of unique work experience. Focus the first 10 years of your career on gaining diverse professional experience. Then, 10 years into your career, you have a unique professional package positioning you to be the expert in your field. My path was far from straight-forward and the business experience compliments my therapy work and together I provide holistic mentorship. Pursuing one of these paths would have brought success and happiness, but I'm truly fulfilled by combining my passions. Allow yourself this same gift of expanding your skills and passions and finding the point of intersection to discover your purpose.
