I worked as a computer hardware and software developer at Hewlett-Packard and Bell Laboratories. I spent most of my career developing business telephone systems (PBX's) system software. I also worked as a software architect where I was responsible for developing and implementing protocols for IP telephony.
My advice to students...
As a software architect, I found it valuable to be a good writer. It's important to be able clearly crystallize and communicate your ideas in writing. Leadership, for me, was often enhanced by my ability to communicate clearly.
